UNITED NEIGHBORHOOD
CENTERS OF AMERICA
VALUE PROPOSITION
The Movement
– For over 100 years, UNCA and its members have been
building community with families in our country’s
urban neighborhoods. As the contemporary stewards
and change agents of the settlement house and
neighborhood center movement, founded in 1911 by
Jane Addams and others, UNCA’s members continue to
innovate, lead social change, and work alongside our
nation’s most vulnerable and challenged families.
Each member’s programs and services are uniquely
adapted to the children and families they serve and
the neighborhoods where they live. By building on
families’ strengths and working with them to reach
their desired potential, UNCA members are the true
social entrepreneurs in American neighborhoods.

Public Policy
Advocacy –
In common cause with the
Alliance for Children and Families, UNCA’s public
policy office in Washington, DC tracks issues of
legislative priority to the membership and
like-minded organizations, acts to affect outcomes
in public policy decisions, and educates the
membership, elected officials, and other
stakeholders about the issues important to children,
families, and neighborhoods in which members work.
With our partner, the
Alliance for
Children and Families, we
have a five-person
public policy office in Washington, DC.
Based
on our joint-policy priority agenda, the
office works on behalf of our members to
achieve tangible results for better Federal
public policy.
Every two years, UNCA
hosts the National Policy Summit, to
provide the opportunity for members and
partners to dialogue with
decision-makers, stay current on policy
issues, and learn about what is coming
in the near future regarding important
policy decisions affecting members’
neighborhoods.
