The winners and finalists of the ARAMARK Building Community 2012 Innovation Awards were announced on May 2. Full details are available online.

In this second year of the awards program, UNCA, the Alliance for Children and Families, and ARAMARK focused in on workforce development programs. By recognizing this critical area of community building work, the awards aim to highlight programs that can serve as examples nationally of innovative and successful efforts to get people into jobs with a career path.

In addition, the leadership award has been renamed to honor our former CEO, Peter Goldberg, who served in this capacity until his death in August 2011. The awardee has worked for more than 24 years to advocate for the power of nonprofits. He does this by bringing together fellow organizations with businesses and state and local government to address the needs of at-risk children and families.

The nearly 70 applications we received for both the leadership and workforce awards show once again the strength of our networks and the good work being carried out every day in communities across the country. Thank you to everyone who participated; applications from both 2011 and 2012 will be made available in the Severson Information Center to encourage replication and program development.

The Forum for Youth Investment and National Collaboration for Youth Research Group have created a set of common outcomes for youth development programs. These outcomes were developed through surveys completed by members of the 50 national organizations that make up National Collaboration for Youth.

Common outcomes and indicators help the field moved towards a shared language on youth development, which can foster greater collaboration and impact. While the outcomes are a work in progress, it may be helpful to review where the field of youth development is moving at the national level.

Creators of these indicators hope that organizations will use this information to:

  • articulate program goals
  • develop logic models and evaluations
  • develop communication materials
  • identify commonalities and common measures with other youth-serving organizations

By focusing on social determinants, the public, private and nonprofit sectors have an opportunity to work together in building on the strengths of each sector, overcoming deficits and becoming a whole in better serving communities. In one exciting new area of collaboration, the community development industry is expanding into partnerships that have greater impact on improving health outcomes in low income neighborhoods.

Several interesting collaborations are being developed around the country that focus on improving health outcomes. Although there is still much to be learned in connecting health, nonprofit human service organizations and the community development sectors, this relationship is key-critical in forging a holistic approach to real and permanent change for low-income communities.

UNCA and the Alliance will explore the challenges and opportunities for such cross-sector work. In addition, experts from the Federal Reserve System will examine some national examples of how these partnerships work in producing results that are showing the way to stronger communities and building stronger families.

For background information on this issue, please visit the Health Communities Conference website, which features David Erickson's session on exploring the intersection of community development and health.
